TEXT :
Programmes: First ship of revised 'Arleigh Burke' class design was authorised in the FY94 budget. Funding for three provided in FY95 and a further two in FY96 plus partial funding for a third. Balance for this third ship plus three more in FY97 and four in FY98. Multiyear contracts were awarded on 6 March 1998, six to Bath Iron Works and eight to Ingalls. Two more to Ingalls on 14 December 1998. Total of 29 of the class seems
likely. Structure: The upgrade from Flight II includes two hangars for embarked helicopters and an extended transom to increase the size of a dual RAST fitted flight deck at the expense of SQR-19 TACTAS. Vertical launchers are increased at each end by three cells and will be able to fire the agile Evolved Sea Sparrow missile. Harpoon may be fitted for, but not with. Other changes include the Kingfisher minehunting sonar, a reconfiguration of the SPY-1D arrays and the inclusion of a Track Initiation Processor in the Aegis radar system. Use of fibre optic technology should reduce weight and improve reliability. A Kollmorgen optronic bridge periscope is fitted. A remote minehunting system WLD-1 is to be installed. DDG 83 is scheduled to be the first ship to include 'Smart Ship' technology
Operational: The helicopter is to carry Penguin and Hellfire missiles. Tactical Tomahawk in due course.
