According to the head of Indian Air Force A. Tipniss, India is planning to modernize its aircraft fleet. In 2001, India will purchase Su-30MKI advanced fighters by OKB Sukhoi. It's expected that in total, India will order some 140 fighters in addition to some 20 Su-30Ks already in service. There are also plans to purchase 10 Mirage-2000H aircraft from France. Continue talks with British Aerospace to purchase some 30-45 Hawk-100 trainers. The cost of each is around 429 million dollars US. (18 billion Rupees)

I really don't understand where do they get money for all that.

It's a long-term modernization program. I suppose India's rate of purchase to be the same as in '90s (up to 10 Sukhoi planes per year). Anyway I wish India to find enough money to support Sukhoi's R+D by buying these Su-30MKIs 'cause it's the RF Gov't that is really poor.

Ok, the word on the wire is that the IAF intend to supplement a Mirage 2000 buy with Rafaeles!!!

I guess the teething problems has counted against another Sukhoi buy...like i said customer care will always be key.

We get the money from selling software and other stuff worth 150 billion a year to the so called rich countries. Our net reserves are 100 billion, our GDP is 700 billion and growing at 7 percent for the last 10 years. We are 5th richest country as per the World Bank PPP rule, we have the 4th largest market for the MNC's and yes we seem to have finally made it to the big leagues. Today we lend to the IMF, we have Satellite and Rocketry capabilities and oh we invented the most fo the rules of mathematics 4000 years ago. We would have made billions more if we charged the world for using the Zero in mathematics as trade rights since we invented it when your anscestors were clubbing each other over your heads
