Только никак не могу понять как туда вода попала.
Что же касается самой статьи - крутая мешанина интересных фактов и данных с не менее крутыми домыслами и откровенной ... про электромагнитные (подводные) снаряды.
Ну да ладно.
Едиснтвенное, что меня заинтересовало во всей этой истории, это АПЛ Мемфис.
Возможно ответ именно там.
Ее действительно переделали в 1989 годы для кое-каких испытаний, в частности по самоходным подводным аппаратам и по-моему ГАС.
Что это фактически экспериментальная лодка делала в том районе?
Испытывала ГАС?
Или самоходные аппараты.
В любом случае информацию по ее переделке сейчас найти крайне трудно.

USS MEMPHIS (SSN 691) was commissioned on 17 December 1977, and joined Submarine Squadron EIGHT in Norfolk, VA in 1978. She deployed for the first time in June 1979.
In March 1981, USS MEMPHIS completed an around the world cruise via the Panama Canal, including operations with both the Sixth and Seventh Fleets.
In January 1994 MEMPHIS entered Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for RCOH and modifications to support her Research and Development role. Upon completion of the shipyard availability she was assigned to Submarine Development Squadron TWELVE in Groton, CT.
In 2003 the Memphis was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and made port on or about Aug. 23, 2003 at Manama, Bahrain. Memphis was visited by two members of the King of Bahrain’s Shura Royal Advisory Council, four ambassadors, several prominent businessmen and a U.S. Embassy staff member. Germany, India, Japan and Russia were among the countries represented by their ambassadors to Bahrain. This deployment marked the first time in 22 years that the Memphis had sailed in 5th Fleet waters. Memphis returned to port on the coldest day of the year, January 16, 2004, after a regularly scheduled six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea.

In May 1988, the Chief of Naval Operations, ADM Trost, approved a proposal to assign an Atlantic Fleet SSN 688 Class submarine "A principle mission of supporting submarine research and development. ..to stimulate the development of technology to support advanced submarine concepts and provide a rapid mechanism to speed the introduction of new systems to the fleet." The Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, ADM Kelso responded by nominating USS MEMPHIS in June 1988 for this assignment.
While USS MEMPHIS remains a deployable asset the Fleet Commander maintaining her war fighting capabilities and responsibilities, she also serves the research and development community, both public and private, conducting shipboard testing and evaluation of promising technologies. USS MEMPHIS' research and development office (PEO-SUB-R) of the Naval Sea Systems Command under the sponsorship of the Director, Submarine Warfare (N87).
During the overhaul completed in 1996, several significant modifications were performed to enhance the ship's ability to accommodate major and multiple research and development projects. These modifications permit effective, economical and timely evaluation of prototype technological advancements in a truly operational environment.
The ship and her crew represent the Navy's significant commitment to meeting our operational commitments in parallel with the development of tomorrow's technologies today. This unique and dynamic capability and responsibility will ensure the early introduction of promising technologies to the submarine fleet of today and set the foundation for the submarine force of tomorrow.
