If you truly want good elevation accuracy, then choose a reliable GPS receiver, that has an 'accurate' built-in barometric altimeter. Unfortunately, there is ONLY ONE receiver currently available that really satisfies this requirement - and that is the Garmin GPS MAP 76S. A few other units have a built-in barometric device, but NONE of them (and I have tried them all) do as good a job as the MAP76S. Yes, it is expensive, but you get what you pay for. "
